Showcasing at BIGSOUND Festival is a huge milestone in any Australian artist’s career. But it’s potentially most significant for the local acts who watch the Valley swell to maximum capacity each year as the event kicks off, bringing music industry heavyweights in swarms. We caught up with five acts on the precipice of their showcase performances and recorded their responses in our 2019 BIGSOUND Yearbook. This is: Sasha from Sycco.

What are you most proud of in your career so far?

Probably supporting Tia Gostelow? But also just putting out music, and being happy with it.

What’s your relationship with Brisbane like?

It’s the best city in Australia, or, in the world, apparently? I always wanted to leave it but now I think it’s so good, with the music. There’s nothing better.

What’s your biggest goal right now?

Um, world domination? That’s it. And probably headlining Coachella. I’ll put you on the door.

Music-wise, I think I want to use more pop sensibilities, with a bit of a psychedelic twist.

Who do you look up to?

At the moment, BENEE and Hatchie. Them together is like, what I wanna be, I reckon. I don’t know, I just had that revelation this morning!

What scares you the most?

Spiders. I don’t think there’s ever a spider that wouldn’t scare me.

What’s your biggest strength?

I know what each star sign means? Most of them. I’m a Virgo, so I’m like, kind of a perfectionist, and a bit of a clean freak. But I don’t think I’m really a Virgo, because my moon sign is Sagittarius, and that means like, well, kind of another perfectionist. I’m just a bit of a perfectionist. Interesting.

What’s a lesson you’ve learnt as a musician so far?

To listen to peoples’ opinion. Even though you want to be like “I don’t give a shit about what anybody says”, people just want to help you. I always put music on SoundCloud, but I didn’t want peoples’ opinion. If they said something, I’d say “No, it’s my thing!” but now, I’m very open to it, and want to know.

Who’s in your clique?

We’re actually called the Kombucha Club. It’s a bit embarrassing. I’m Raspberry Lemonade. Then we’ve got Cinnamon and Lime, that’s Asha. Summer, she’s Ginger Lemon. We’ve got Cherry Plum, which is Felicity. Passionfruit Lemon, which is Hallie, and Blueberry Pie, which is Jenna. They’re my girls. They’re my babes! That’s so funny.

Who’s your style icon?
I literally have no opinion in style-  I don’t understand how it works. Like, we were watching the OC and everyone was laughing at all the pointless belts and stuff like that, and I was like “I don’t know what’s wrong with that”.

Four tracks on a mixtape Sasha’s sending to her best friend:

Tame Impala – ‘Cause I’m a Man

Hatchie - Sugar and Spice

Lime Cordiale – What Is Growing Up

KAIIT – OG Love Kush Pt 2

Senior Quote?

I have a lot. I’m a quote queen. I’ve got “It’s go time”. Sometimes with a hashtag in the beginning.

Or just “You good, babe?”. That one’s from Splendour, it’s probably the most said thing there. Most condescending thing ever. Like, “I really don’t care if you’re good, babe, but you good babe?”. I’m good, babe. Are you good, babe?
